I am a professional web and user-interface designer working as the Usability Design Manager for MyKnowledgeMap in York, UK. My strong art & design background coupled with a solid knowledge of systems development and programming techniques puts me in a unique position to develop interfaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally intuitive.

Taking time away from working on projects for such clients as the NHS, The RSPB, The Chartered Management Institute, GHD and a number of further and higher education institutions, this site is my personal playground, portfolio and blog.

Why's it gone pink?
d13design has gone pink for October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness!
“Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research. But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event. The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.”

“I love being able to pull all my work together in one place. It always surprises me just how much work I actually get done and it’s always great to see that I still have such a diverse range of projects to work on.”

After close to 2 years of planning and development the ALPS software solution, provided by MyKnowledgeMap, is now live with pilot users. Designed as a fully end-to-end solution for managing assessment of placement students within healthcare settings the suite of tools combines content authoring, content packaging, competency mapping, mobile completion of assessments, online e-portfolio and competency management. The resulting system is powerful, flexible and incredibly innovative and opens up a whole new dimension to mobile and digital assessment of competency based skills in real-world settings.

Compendle product blog

Posted on August 21st, 2008 and tagged with , , ,

To coincide with the launch of Compendle as a web-based application we, at MyKnowledgeMap, also wanted to create a platform for a community of users and enthusiasts to collaborate and share their experiences. We looked at a variety of ways to quickly establish a blog and we settled on WordPress as the platform.

There were some real plus-points that led us to choose WordPress for this:

  1. It’s so quick to get set up and established
  2. We could give out contributor rights to a ton of people while maintaining editorial control
  3. We could all contribute to the posts while the theme was being developed
  4. Incredibly easy theme and plugin development (the Compendle blog is a totally custom project)

So, with a new WordPress install set up on our PHP hosting service we got to work with the customisation of the site.

North Circle Photography

I was approached by North Circle Photography through a friend of a friend when they were just establishing themselves as one of Northamptonshire’s premiere contemporary photographers. They were after a clean and contemporary web presence that communicated their clean and clear approach to photography.

Focusing on the areas of portraits, commercial, wedding and illustrative the website showcases some of their work and is really stong introduction to their photographic approach.

Using a combination of clean HTML, CSS styling, Javascript effects and PHP contact forms this website does the job quickly and simply.

Compendle Web

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 and tagged with , , ,

Compendle was developed a few years ago by myself and the e-learning development team at MyKnowledgeMap. It’s key aim was to transfer some of the technical tasks associated with the packaging and delivery of e-learning from the IT specialists and to the practitioners.

Developed, initially as a desktop application, Compendle allowed course tutors and teachers to gather all of their existing learning resources, organise them into sensible and relevant structures and then publish them ready for delivery to learners. What made Compendle unique was the fact that you needed absolutely no technical expertise to start delivering standards based learning packages.

Compendle has now evolved and this month sees the release of Compendle Web–an internet based version that brings with it all of the great features of the original product coupled with the power and potential of the MyKnowledgeMap Core Framework.

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 and tagged with , , ,

The National Library for Health is project from the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and is looking to pull together their vast portfolio of online training and teaching materials into one, centralised repository. Led by MyKnowledgeMap, in association with Intrallect, and powered by the IntraLibrary Repository system the NLH aims to be a powerful and flexible solution for creating, archiving and discovering learning resources.

MyKnowledgeMap are supplying a number of elements:

  • Compendle–for gathering and organising resources
  • QuestionBuilder–for creating interactive tests and quizzes
  • Review Panel–for ensuring quality in all submitted resources
  • Custom Web Portal–bringing all NLH functionality into one place

By intergrating these tools and services with the underlying IntraLibrary system it should make it quick and easy for guest users to discover resources and contributor users to create and store learning.

GHD Skills Analysis

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 and tagged with , , ,

When GHD (Good Hair Days) approached MyKnowledgeMap looking for a software application to help them manage the sales skills of their dispersed sales team Capability Matrix fit the bill. Allowing for complex organisational hierarchies as well as incredibly details, multi-tiered competency frameworks, Capability Matrix could be used remotely and monitored centrally.

The challenge with creating a system for an organisation with such a strong brand is making it feel like a tool that they can own–something that their employees would invest their time in, while maintaining the clean, simple and clear interface that a skills management application requires.
