With a long weekend booked off from work we decided to all hop in the car and head up to the Yorkshire coast for the day. We headed out past York (sat in the rush hour traffic for about an hour) and then sped up the A64 towards Scarborough. We split from the main traffic and headed over to Filey–a bit quiter than Scarborough or Bridlington.
We managed to park up right by the beach and headed down for a look around. After a quick tour of the beach we set off for Filey town in search of a cash machine and a bucket-n-spade shop for Jake. On our travels through the town centre we even stumbled on a small Italian deli where we stocked up on fresh Ciabbata and olives for a slightly more sophisticated picnic.
We sat on the (quite windy) beach and tucked into the olives before heading off to giant pools that had formed on the beach for a bit of paddling. Jake loved the splashing even though it was pretty cold and it was soon time to head back up to the car for a change of clothes.
Next up was a cup of tea and a cake in the sea-front cafe and back up towards the town for a good play on the adventure playground.
We finished the day with a trip to a fish-n-chip shop. Unfortunatley Jake fell asleep between the car park and the town so we settled in to fish-n-chips in the car at the top of the Filey cliffs.
Quite a successful day–so successful in fact that we’re heading back there for a 4 day stay later in the summer!
